Saw-cut mold steel is usually cheaper on the purchase order. Pre-machined steel costs more upfront, but that extra cost can disappear quickly if it saves steel weight, setup time, CNC hours, and machine waiting time. For a small block and an available milling machine, saw-cut may be the obvious choice. For a large block, expensive steel, or a shop that is already busy, pre-machining can easily be the cheaper route overall. The comparison comes down to four numbers: how much steel you buy, how much has to be removed, how long your shop spends preparing it, and what the block costs when it is finally ready for real mold machining.
Read MoreCheck the block before machining starts. Confirm the steel grade and paperwork, then measure length, width, and thickness at more than one point. After that, look at bow, twist, taper, rust, dents, pits, saw marks, and any suspicious lines. What matters is not whether the raw block is simply “bigger than final size.” It has to stay big enough after you clean up the faces and remove the bad areas. For example, a block may measure 155 mm thick while the finished part only needs 150 mm. That sounds comfortable. But if one face needs 2.5 mm removed and the other needs another 3 mm, the block is already too small. This is why incoming inspection should focus on usable steel, not just nominal size.
Read MoreLarge mold steel blocks are best stored flat on clean, dry, level supports, with the floor or rack checked for the real load. Support spacing should be based on the block’s thickness, span, overhang and final accuracy—not a fixed rule such as “one support every meter.” A solid 2.5 × 1.2 × 0.3 m block already weighs about 7.1 metric tons, so small mistakes in support height, contact area, lifting or moisture control can quickly become expensive. It also helps to separate four problems that are often mixed together. A block can sag slightly under its own weight and spring back later. It can be permanently bent by overload or poor support. It can rust because of moisture. And it can move after machining because internal stresses are released. These are different problems, and they should not be solved in the same way.
