Introduction:

1.2083 is a martensitic stainlesstool steel with high chromium content (-13%), giving it excellent corrosion resistance, high wear resistance, and good polishability,It is typically supplied in the quenched and tempered condition with hardness ranging from 48-52 HRc. Its ability tomaintain a high surface finish and resist attack from chemically aggressive plastics makes it a premium choice for demanding mold applications.

Characteristics:

  • Stainless tool steel (~13% Cr)
  • Excellent corrosion resistance
  • High wear resistance
  • Good polishability (mirror finish possible)
  • Supplied quenched & tempered, hardness ~48-52 HRC
  • Resistant to aggressive plastics(PVC, acetates, flame-retardant materials)

Applications:

  • Molds for corrosive plastics (PVC, acetates, plastics with flame retardants)
  • Molds requiring high surface finish (optical lenses, medical tools, packaging)
  • Plastic molds exposed to humid environments or corrosive cooling channels
  • Components requiring high polishability and wear resistance

Heat Treatment & Processes

  1. 01

    Hardening

Heat the steel evenly to 820–840°C until the whole section reaches temperature. Then quench in oil to cool.

  2. 02

    Normalizing

Heat the steel uniformly to about 900°C to achieve a normalized structure.

  3. 03

    Annealing

Heat P20 steel to 770–790°C, hold it well at temperature, and then let it cool slowly inside the furnace.

  4. 04

    Tempering

Heat the steel evenly and hold it for at least 1 hour per 25 mm of thickness at the chosen tempering temperature. Allow it to cool in still air.
